Who are you interning under, what is your role?
I’m interning under Laura Mynahan and I’m an interior design intern. I do many of the tasks for the interior design team, like dealing with furniture or materials that need to be put on presentation decks for clients.
How did you hear about Element?
Through a senior that spoke to my class about internships. She said how much she loved Element, and that we should try to get an internship here if we had the opportunity. I did my research and thought it was a really good idea!
Have you interned with us before, if not, have you interned elsewhere?
I have not interned here, and this is actually my first internship.
Where do you go to school? What year are you and what do you study? Any courses that prepared you for this internship?
I go to school at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. I just completed my freshman year, and I am an interior architecture major.
I would say my media class because a a lot of what I’m doing right now is computer work. I was not a computer person, but my media class really pushed me to use programs like InDesign or Photoshop, which I was not introduced to before. Now I work with InDesign to make full decks, and without the class I wouldn’t have been able to jump into it as quickly as I did.
What drew you to your field?
I’ve always been interested in design, particularly fashion design. As I got older, I realized that I liked interior design more. I watch HGTV shows, so I’ve always really liked the idea of putting a space together and making everyone feel comfortable in it.
What are some goals that you wish to accomplish through this internship? Is there something that you are most excited to be working on/currently working on?
During this internship I want to see what part of the design phase that I enjoy or am the best at; I want to figure out if I want to focus on one specific phase or involve myself in the whole design process. Another goal I have is to decide if I want to stick with retail design or if I want to go into residential design.
One project I’m pretty interested in right now is a credit union in Alabama. It’s all beach vibes! There’s a lot of fun colors and I’ve been watching Laura pick out designs that we don’t typically work with. So I’ve been trying to get creative with it and I really want to see how it ends up looking.
now for some Fun Questions!
Any pets?
I have a dog! Her name is Ella and she is a four-year old English Cream Golden Retriever. Everyone is always like “Oh my gosh, you have a golden she must be so cuddly!” But she grew up with my grandparent’s dog who is much older and he’s not cuddly, and she took after him.
Coffee, Tea, Other?
I stick with water a lot. But I do drink coffee when I want it. I usually take it with oat milk or coconut milk with some sugar.
“Weirdest” hobby?
People find this weird, but I really don’t think that’s fair! My sister and I love to take long walks, which I find pretty normal, but people always think it’s weird because we won’t just walk a mile, we’ll walk like a half-marathon. It’s fun to us because we’ll talk the whole time, or we’ll go to a place that we always wanted to go to.
Recently read, listened to, or watched etc.? What stood out?
I watched the show The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022), and that was very good. It teaches you that you can’t judge someone off how they used to be like. People will change and you must adapt and change yourself as well. I also just started a book, The People We Meet on Vacation. That’s pretty good too, but I’ve only read a few chapters.
Do you play a sport?
In high school I played soccer, basketball, track, and lacrosse. I love sports, it’s always been a part of me. I was planning on playing lacrosse in college, but with this major I don’t have enough time.
Give me one additional fun fact about you!
I have a very weird fear! It’s called ishicascadiggaphobia. It’s a fear of elbow creases. I don’t like when people touch my inner elbows, I’ll freak out. That’s probably the weirdest thing about me.
